James T Russell invented the CD, recorder and player in the 1960s with patents filed in 1971. Licenses issued to Phillips and Sony for development and production. The first CD player was released by sony cdp-101 in 1982.

The compact disc was invented by a collaboration of individuals. There was not any one individual that has responsibility for this invention. The CD was invented by a joint task force between Sony and Phillips who not only invented the medium itself, but the set of standards that it would follow, how it would do error correction, and a whole other batch of things that all culminated in the eventual creation of what the compact disc is today.

The Compact disc project team was led by Toshitada Do and Kees Schouhamer Immink.

The first CD that was pressed was done in Hanover, Germany. It was a recording of Herbert von Karajan conducting the Alpine Symphony by Richard Strauss.

The first commercially available CD Roms were introduced by Sony in October 1982 (CDP-101). The CD was first introduced in Japan and Europe then about a year later in the U.S.
