The prologue is missing from the MGM DVD of Fistful of Dollars due to a combination of factors related to rights issues and the film's editing history. When the film was re-released and edited for its DVD version, certain scenes were cut for pacing and narrative flow, which included the prologue that originally set the tone. Additionally, the prologue may have been excluded to streamline the viewing experience, as it was deemed less essential for modern audiences familiar with the film's context.
