I've always believed that professional people are sales people, regardless of their observable role. An ethical Sales Professional has a responsibility to guide the buyer of their product or service to a decision that best suits the needs of the prospect, regardless of the financial effect on the sales person.

A sales professional has a better opportunity to learn how best to serve the prospect's needs if they are genuinely interested in what caused the prospect to realize that they had a need for something. Asking open-ended questions that permit the prospect to offer information about their buying motivations assists the sales professional.

Complete familiarity with one's own product or service is essential to sales success. If you can casually reference your product or service in response to an expressed need or desire, your sales will increase naturally. People do business with people and they don't like to be pitched on anything.

Closing is an important skill for sales people. That is where leadership skills come into play. As a former Realtor, one of my favorite closes after determining that my buyers had found the house they wanted to buy was to offer a couple of optional meeting times for writing up the contract.
