My Grandfather would get the fire going nice and hot, and just before he went to bed he would put wet wood on the fire, because it would burn slower. He had a 5 gal. bucket he use to soak wood in. He would let the wood soak for about 4-5 hrs before he would put it on the fire.

Close the dampers to restrict the airflow. No air, no burn.
