Andrew Beard's first patent was for a plow he designed in 1881. After selling the rights to this original patent, he went on to patent a second plow design in 1887. In 1892, Andrew Beard patented a design for a rotary steam engine.

He is sometimes falsely credited as the original inventor of the automatic railroad coupler, who was actually Eli H. Janney (the knuckle coupler). In fact, Andrew Beard patented a variant design in 1897, which is commonly called the Jenny Coupler. These serve to join railroad cars together, a dangerous job that had resulted in many injuries. For his work on railroad coupler design, Andrew Beard has been inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in Akron, Ohio.
