To make a nether portal you need the following items: 12 blocks of obsidian,and a Flint and Steel. To get the obsidian just mine near lava, because that is where I always find it. To get Flint and Steel, you need iron and flint (both can easily be found in a random mountain). To actually make it, place the obsidian with a 2 wide top 2 wide bottom, and the rest on the sides (has to be equal!), then activate (left click on PC, so use whatever your using as activate button) your Flint and Steel. Now you need to make sure that your gear is good, then you can go through and double your Mincraft size!

Umm... you can't make a fire you can hold in your hand (unless you mod it) but you can make a flint and steel which is made by flint and steel. to make it go to a crafting table put an iron ingot in the corner and a flint in the middle. Good luck. :) EDIT: You don't mod it, you use InvEdit or Single Player Commands. It appears as a fire in your hand and you can also hack water or lava. NOTE: Once you place it you cannot retrieve it after placing unless you have a bucket.
