It could be one of three things.

First, check that the rubber ring around the top is still flexible and provides a good seal. Depending on the model, you may be able to remove it and wash it, and underneath where it is fitted.

Second, make sure that the pressure valve is clean. On most models you can just pop it off by tugging with a little force. Clean the valve and where it was attached with warm sudsy water and if they are clogged take the stuff out with a toothpick or soak it for a few hours in a 50% vinegar/water solution.

Third, see that the rubber/silicone pressure valve is in the correct position. In three years I have not needed to adjust mine but kids, cooking and cleaning can lightly dislodge it.

Why is it easier to cook in a pressure cooker?

The universal gas law states that (pressure * volume/temperature) of a gas is a constant. Hence, if the volume stays the same (as in a pressure cooker), the air in the cooker can increase in temperature beyond the boiling point of water as pressure builds up over the normal atmospheric pressure. A higher temperature means faster cooking. The above is a very simplistic view of the physics involved.
