First of all if the fire is big get everyone out of the house to safety, then call the fire brigade (do not attempt to fight the fire).

If the fire is small (it has just started):

  • Unplug the iron
  • Throw water on the fire

If this does not help get everyone out of the house and call the fire brigade as above.

Always think of People's safety first. It is possible replace things burned in a fire but not people.

Will oxygen and iron burn?

Oxygen can support combustion, but iron itself does not burn in typical atmospheric conditions. However, iron can oxidize, forming iron oxide (rust), in the presence of oxygen and moisture. This process is a slow form of oxidation rather than rapid combustion.
