Who invented Brer Rabbit Syrup and when?

Not sure who invented it but when I was a child in the 1950's my father used to get a can of Brer Rabbit Maple Syrup for Christmas from his Aunt Juliet Goodrich in Michigan. He told me once he would go there in the summers when he was a child (1920's) and they would be making the syrup.
