King Ferdinand II of Aragon, one of the Catholic Monarchs of Spain, sent Vasco Núñez de Balboa on his expeditions in the early 16th century. Balboa is best known for his exploration of the Isthmus of Panama and for being the first European to see the Pacific Ocean from the New World. His expeditions were part of Spain's broader efforts to explore and conquer new territories in the Americas.
