Garibaldi's expedition, known as the Expedition of the Thousand or the Mille, began in May 1860 from the port of Quarto near Genoa, Italy. They then crossed to the mainland and continued their campaign up the Italian peninsula, ultimately converging with the forces of King Victor Emmanuel II in Naples.
