Giovanni da Verrazzano, an Italian explorer, sailed under the French flag and is best known for his exploration of the North American coast in 1524. He entered the New World through what is now the Bahamas and then traveled north along the Atlantic coast, reaching present-day New York Harbor. Verrazzano mapped parts of the coastline from modern-day North Carolina to Newfoundland, making significant contributions to European knowledge of the region. His journey marked one of the earliest European explorations of the eastern coast of North America.
