The new improved explorer ships built in the 1400s were called caravels. Ships are built in shipyards. Shipyards are located in most large seaports so that when a ship is built it can safely navigate to sea.
Many such ships were built. Notable amongst them were the Pinta and Nina on Columbus' voyage.
