They are called Blockade Runners
The CSS Alabama was a warship built in Great Britain. It was built secretly, expressly for the use of the Confederacy during the Civil War.
During the Civil War, wooden ships were used. The ships the North built were used to blockade the South. The ships the South used were built to outrun the blockade. This all changed when the first ironclad, the Virginia, was made. It was unsinkable at the time. The North answered with the Monitor, and the two ships battled to a stalemate later in the war.
The CSS Shenandoah was built in Scotland and launched in August of 1863. She was purchased by the Confederacy in September 1864. Commissioned on October 19th, 1864, she formally struck her colors at Liverpool, England on November 6th 1865. She was the last unit of the Confederacy to surrender, and is said to be the last unit to fire a shot in anger during the war.
British private citizens.Blockade runners were/are ships designed for clandestine tasks such as running the blockade- a legal ban on ship traffic which is laid down by Naval vessels ( in some cases the Coast Guard might assist in preventing blockade running) the were used widely in the Civil War by the Confederates. The South either built blockade runners themselves or purchased them from Great Britain. During the US Civil War the term can also refer to the people that tried to avoid being captured by the Union blockading ships. These captains would either be shipping supplies into the South or be shipping products like cotton out to Europe.Blockade Runners were also used during the Diaspora following the Russian revolution and B/R traffic operated in both directions in the Russian Civil War ( which followed Revolution). There is some evidence a White Russian Blockade runner blew up in New York Harbor in the late twenties. three crewmen survived and they turned out to be Russian aliens. I do not know how the case was resolved after they recovered from their injuries. They may have applied for Political asylum. a Good action adventure movie could be done on the White Russian Blockade runners which may have included submarines and aircraft as well as conventional ships. Ship ahoy, Comrade, and mind that siphon manifold- Take her down- To siphon depth- Coast Guard cutters in visual range. ring ring. down we go.
