Vasco Núñez de Balboa began his explorations in the early 16th century in the region of present-day Panama. He initially arrived in the New World as a settler in Hispaniola but later moved to the mainland of Central America. Balboa became the first European to see the Pacific Ocean from the Americas when he crossed the Isthmus of Panama in 1513. His expeditions were significant in expanding European knowledge of the region and its geography.
