Jacques Cartier was primarily searching for a westward passage to Asia, specifically looking for a route to the lucrative markets of China and India. In his voyages during the 1530s, he explored the St. Lawrence River and claimed parts of what is now Canada for France, believing he had found the pathway to the riches of the East. His expeditions ultimately laid the groundwork for French colonization in North America.
