The Narragansett Tribe traveled primarily by canoe on the region's rivers and coastal waters, utilizing wooden canoes crafted from tree trunks. They also traversed the land on foot, often following well-established trails that connected various hunting, fishing, and gathering sites. Travel was essential for trade, social interactions, and seasonal migrations to access different resources. Their extensive knowledge of the terrain allowed them to navigate efficiently through their environment.

The Wampanoag tribes (including the Massachusett, Nauset, Nantucket and Pennacook) were located in the area that became eastern Massachusetts. They spoke a language called Natick. The Narragansett tribe were immediately to their south in the area that became Rhode Island. They seem to have been closely related to the Wampanoags, but the Narragansett clearly dominated them and other small groups in the same area, and forced them to pay tribute in the form of deer hides, shell beads and so on. The Narragansett language is almost identical to Natick.
