At the time of first contact with Europeans it is estimated that there were about 33,000 Ojibwe people.

Today there are around 130,000 in the USA (generally known as Chippewas), with another 60,000 Ojibwe in Canada. These figures do not include the large number of mixed-race Canadian Métis, many of whom are part Ojibwe.
