In about 1565 the main languages spoken along the coast of Virginia were of the Algonquian language family: Lenape (Delaware), Nanticoke, Powhatan, Pamlico.

By 1700 this had changed radically, with English being the major language along the coast and most languages in the immediate interior belonging to the Iroquoian group: Seneca (Mingo), Nottoway, Meherrin, Tuscarora.
