The answer varies from one territory to another: Inuit occupy a huge land area, from Alaska to Greenland. Along the Arctic coast, most Inuit hunt seals, walrus and whales. Both on the coast and inland they eat fish - halibut, char, trout or whatever's available. Inland Inuit were once highly dependent on caribou, and these are still a favourite food. Where they are available they also hunt muskoxen and polar bears - eating all except the bear's liver, which is toxic because it contains too much vitamin A. And they exploit seabirds, ducks, geese and their eggs. During the fur trade era they earned money by trapping fox, weasels and wolves.

These animals also provided traditional Inuit with skins for clothing, tents and boats (kayaks & umiaks), as well as materials for sewing, constructing houses, making weapons and other implements. Other Natural Resources included stone for making tools and weapons and building houses, snow and ice for making snow houses, driftwood for sled, tent and boat frames, and a variety of plants which were used for food and medicines.

Although we often think of Inuit as living in a cold and barren place, the Arctic held everything they needed to make a comfortable life for themselves, and most Inuit still prefer to live there.
