The two main lines were the Union Pacific (coming from Omaha, Nebraska) and the Western Pacific (coming from Sacramento, California). The Western Pacific workers were mostly Chinese. The Union Pacific workers were mostly American. It was easy for them because they had all their resources on the same continent, unlike the others who had to import from China.
Most of the labour used to build the Canadian Pacific Railway were immigrants because they would work for less pay. On the eastern side the largest ethnic group would have been Irish. On the western side it was the Chinese.
