Each of the many Sioux tribes spoke a dialect of their common language and each tribe is grouped into one of those three dialect divisions: Dakota, Nakota and Lakota.
The Dakota tribes are Mdewakanton, Wahpekute, Wahpeton and Sisseton.
The Nakota tribes are Yankton and Yanktonai.

Each hunting band would have its own chiefs and each tribe had a council of elders; there were also war chiefs and temporary war-party leaders.
