Each of the many Sioux tribes spoke a dialect of their common language and each tribe is grouped into one of those three dialect divisions: Dakota, Nakota and Lakota.

The Dakota tribes are Mdewakanton, Wahpekute, Wahpeton and Sisseton.

The Nakota tribes are Yankton and Yanktonai.

The Lakota (or Teton) tribes are Oglala, Brule, Minneconjou, Two Kettle, Hunkpapa, Sans Arc and Blackfoot Sioux (not the same as the Blackfoot of the far northern Plains).

Each tribe was divided into 7 huntings bands (tiyospayein Lakota), 7 being a sacred number among all of these tribes. The term used for the entire Sioux people was oceti sakow'in(seven council fires). Each hunting band would have its own chiefs and each tribe had a council of elders; there were also war chiefs and temporary war-party leaders.
