What was the significance of Confederacy?

The Confederacy was significant because during the civil war the north tried (and eventually succeeded) to destroy the southern way of life and the Confederacy was created to defended that way of life.

The Iroquois Confederacy is significant because it's Constitution is the founding principles upon which the U.S. Constitution was based. It is from these freedom loving people that we got our present form of government. The Iroquois was given a constitution by the Huron Peacemaker whom with Hayenwatha, the Prophet of Peace, and Jikohnsaseh, the Great Peace Woman and Mother of Nations, established the Great Law. It was a God given document that declared the Peace, Love, Justice, and Reason which created a society with no poor, no orphans, and no jails.

They have served as an inspiration for the women of the suffergette movement which secured for American women a portion of the rights that Native American women and Iroquois women in particular had enjoyed from the beginning of time. If an Iroquois man saw a white man beat his wife, he would beat the white man. This is why many "captured' white women like Mary Jemison remained with the Iroquois as they had more rights among the Indians than they did in the white world.

They also inspired the North Star Trail which was the underground railroad for escaped slaves. It was not uncommon for the Iroqouis man to encounter a slaver whom he would cause an exchange so that the slave would then be master, or in many cases cause the slave to be set free. This knowledge swept through the slave districts, so that each one who dreamt of freedom, would set his sights on the North Star, knowing that it would lead to freedom among the Haudenosaunee.

Countless generations have been inspired by the Haudenosaunee love of freedom, and their respect for justice and reason. Peoples all over the world have used the United States model as a blue print for their own restructured democracies, not realizing that the original came from the Haudenosaunee, People of the Long House.

Their oral traditions also served as an inspiration for a religion, the Mormons. Joseph Smith grew up in the Iroquois country, just 15 miles from Ganondagan, the hill where the House of Peace was established. It was not functioning during his life, but the Iroquois are throughout New York even to this day. With the Iroquois in his back yard, and with their oral traditions of a Christ like Peacemaker who taught that we should love oneanother, and live together in Peace. The stories of this Peacemaker, and a light and darker skinned peoples who shaved their heads, could be none other than the Iroquois among whom he lived. His Law of Consecration was his attempt to get the Saints to live a communistic life of sharing the way he saw exampled in the Indian culture around him. However these are the only similarities to the stories in the Book of Mormon.

Several aspects of our present day government reflect the influence of the Iroquois. Among the Iroquois they had two houses of law making, the Grand Council of Men, and the house of the Clan Women. They had a speaker who functioned similar to our President. And the women were like our judges, having the final say in interpretation of law. Even our symbols reflect the Iroquoian influence. They had an Eagle that sat at the top of the Tree of Peace. The US selected the Eagle and the Liberty Tree.

So the contributions of the Haudenosaunee are extremely visible in our modern day lives.
