A funeral pyre is a collective of combustible material (such as wood) placed together to effectively dispose of a dead persons body. Typically seen in countries such as India and is based on the same process as cremation. The body is disposed of by burning as in cremation in the UK and USA but is typically done outside. In India this can be often seen at locations along the river ganges where after the pyre have finished burning the ashes are pushed/scattered in the river. Although based in religious practice it serves also to satisfy public health precautions due to decomposition of the dead in a hot country can lead to outbreaks of disease (cholora)
