According to Christian tradition, Barnabas was martyred in Salamis. Incensed at his success in preaching and for the conversions that resulted certain itinerant Jews dragged him from a synagogue where he had been preaching and tortured him before finally stoning him to death. It is believed his death occurred around 61 AD. His body was recovered by his cousin, John Mark, and interred in a cave until 485 AD when it was exhumed and finally interred in 488 within a monastery in Cyprus.
