Lancelot killed Gareth, although by accident.
Gloomy or melancholic.
Because he can.
In addition to adventure there was romance between Arthur and Gueneviere, who cuckolded him with Lancelot.
Le morte Darthur was written by Thomas Malory around 1470. Malory did not create all the stories, but based himself on pre-existing French and English sources. The work was not titled Le morte Darthur by Malory. This name was given by William Caxton, the first English book printer who printed the book in 1485. He was also the one who added the chapter division to the book.
According to Thomas Malory's 'Le Morte Darthur' Guinevere died in a nunnery in Almesbury, about 30 miles from Glastonbury, at an old age. She was buried in Glastonbury next to her husband King Arthur.
Gareth is a masculine name of Welsh origin. It first appeared in this form in Thomas Malory's "Le Morte d'Arthur". The name belonged to Sir Gareth, a brother of Gawain and one of the Knights of the Round Table who was reputed to be "strong and yet modest.

Gawain's brothers were; Agravain, Gaheris, and Gareth. Their half-brother, Mordred, was Arthur's son born out of wedlock and through incest with his half-sister, Morgause. The Vulgate Cycle gives slightly different spellings to their names, but they are essentially the same characters as in the Morte.
Kenneth L. Hodges has written: 'Forging chivalric communities in Malory's Le morte Darthur' -- subject(s): Arthurian romances, Chivalry in literature, Community in literature, English Romances, History and criticism, Kings and rulers in literature, Knights and knighthood in literature
I think Sir Gareth is most admirable. He suffers the abusive tongue of Linet as they journey from Camelot to her sister's castle. And in spite of her insults, Garerht fights and defeats knights and thieves left and right. In fact, he says her insults only drove him to fight harder to prove himeslf. And in the rest of the Morte d'Arthur, Gareth always is on the side of chivalry. He doesn't betray his lord's trust like Lancelot did. Gareth doesn't even want to take sides when lancelot and Guinevere's affair is exposed. When she is condemened to burn at the stake, Gareth serves as a guard against his own wishes and only under orders.
