While we need fewer calories as we age, the number of calories we need in a day is highly dependent on our weight. The number of calories you need to intake also depends on how active you are. The more active, the more calories you naturally burn in a day. The less active you are the less calories your body needs.

Think of it in terms of driving a car. If you drive a lot, you're going to have to fill up your tank a lot. But if you don't drive as often you still have gas in your tank so don't need to fill back up.

I would suggest http://www.shapefit.com/dailycalorie-calc.html to get the closest idea of what you need. Its not an exact tool but it will give you a clear idea.
