You need to maintain a workout at a steady rate. There isn't a way to prevent your muscles from dissapearing over time but you need to keep them fit to keep them. I know that protein shakes can help you to gain muscle but it also may increase your your body fat if you don't burn it off. (I know this because I'm a track athlete and need to maintain fitness/muscle as well.)
