To get visible abs you need two things: excessive muscle development, and less-than-average subcutaneous(=under-the-skin) fat.

The muscles you can get by doing endless amounts of situps and crunches, and to get rid of the fat on top of the muscles, hiding them, you need to lose body fat in total.

Short of Liposuction, there's no way to target fat loss, so you have to settle for the old fashioned of eating less/healthier, and exercising more to lose fat all over.

And low carbs isn't the only answer. It's the calories that are important, not where you're getting them from. I'd cut down on fat and sugar first. They are high in calories, and they are the food groups that most of us overeat of anyhow. They can be pretty much removed from our diets and still only make it healthier. Start by giving up sodas and everything deep fried.

Trouble is, our bodies are meant to have some of that fat. It's our insulation, our padding and our energy reserve. Getting rid of is can mess with your immune system and your energy levels, making you tired and prone to becoming sick.
