In the UK, fries are called chips. In North America, they are called fries. If the potatoes are cut very thin, they are called french fries in both the UK and North America. For more information, and photographs, see the page link, further down this page, listed under Related Links.

They are deep fried strips of potatoes, usually salted and sometimes eaten with catsup, which in the UK is called ketchup. In the UK, they are more likely to eaten with salt and vinegar than ketchup.
