Three hundred forty-three firemen were lost in the collapse of the Twin Towers. As per research, those lost at the Pentagon were mostly civilian contractors - no fire department personnel were listed.

In the 9-11 2,977 people died. Out of those people 2,605 people were either on the ground or in the towers. 343 Firefighters died, 60 Police Officers altogether and 24 people are still reported missing.
The Twin Towers were part of the World Trade Center complex in New York City. On September 11th, 2001, two planes flew into the towers in an act of terrorism. We honor the twin towers because 3000 people died on that day. That includes those in the towers, those in the Pentagon, and those who died in the Pennsylvania crash who saved many lives at the cost of their own by taking back the plan which the terrorists had hijacked.

The National Firefighters Memorial in London bears 997 names of fallen wartime firefighters. Most of them presumably died in "the Blitz" (1940-1941).
