As with any place, it varies widley. It depends on the strength, size, and specific location of the tornado. Many tornadoes move across open country, causing little to no damage. Sometimes a weak, short-live tornadoes will hit a farm or a subdivision, knocking down trees and fences, and peeling roof tiles, costing perhaps a few thousand dollars. Stronger tornadoes may tear off roofs and perhaps destroy a few homes, with damage costing a fell million dollars.

In terms of coast of damage, after adjustment for inflation, the most destructive tornado in Texas history was the Wichita Falls tornado of April 10, 1979. This 3/4 mile wide F4 tornado cut a sawth of damage through Wichita Falls, killing 42 people and causing damage worth nearly $1.3 billion in modern amounts, making it the 6th costliest tornado in U.S. history and the costliest at the time it ocurred.

The most extreme damage, however, came with the Jarrell tornado of May 27, 1997. This massive F5 tornado slowly move its way through the Double Creek subdivision in the small town of Jarrel. A large portion of this subdivision was completely erased. Every house was torn from its foundation, leaving nothing but a bare concrete slab. All vegetation was torn away. Grass, streets, sidwalks, and driveways were scoured away, turning the subdivision into a field of mud. The tornado killed 27 people, a very high number considering the small population in its path. Many of the bodies were mutilated beyond recognition. The cost of damage amounted to $58 million in modern amounts, but would have been much higher had the tornado hit a larger population center.

How bad is the damage in South Dakota when a tornado occurs?

As with just about all places that tornadoes strike the damage varies widely depending on how strong the tornado is and exactly where it hits. Since South Dakota is mostly rural most tornadoes cause little to no damage as they don't hit much. However a strong enough tornado could still easily level a few farms. In some cases a weak tornado strikes a town, causing minor to moderated damage. In rare cases, though a large, violent tornado can strike a community and cause utter devastation.
