Answer by Regan Morben

Step one - Check gauge to see if it is charged, you don't want to go near a fire with an empty extinguisher,

Step two - Locate and pull pin near trigger. You cannot discharge the extinguisher until the pin is out.

Step three - Test extinguisher by discharging a small burst in front of your feet, once again you don't want to go near a fire with a non functioning extinguisher.

Step four - Approach fire and and aim at base of the flames, not the flames themselves. Sweep side to side until fire is out or extinguisher is depleted.

Why must you not hold a door open with a fire extinguisher?

If it's a fire or smoke door, it must be able to close automatically to carry out its design function during a fire. If the door is propped open with ANYTHING, the fire and smoke may spread uncontrollably and cause severe injury and fire spread. Also, it is a code violation to set a fire extinguisher on the floor, unless it is on wheels. Also, it is a code violation to place any obstacle within the clear width of any escape doorway. Also, if the fire extinguisher is being used to prop open a door, then it is not where it should be when it may be needed. The proper location may have been designed specifically to fulfill a distance requirement. If caught by a fire inspector, this single act could result in four or more violations.

Do you need a special fire extinguisher for your jet ski or can you just use a small one like for the kitchen thanks?

If that kitchen extinguisher is rated for Class A, B & C, and has a USCG B-1 rating, then yes, it could be used. The four basic classes and what they are used for are as follows:Class A - Solid combustibles that leave an ash residue after being burnedClass B - Gasoline, oils, liquid combustiblesClass C - Electrical firesClass K - Kitchen fire - stove-top or fryer oil cooking fire, for instance, but not for putting out a fire on a Jet-ski.If your ABC or BC extinguisher has no USCG rating on its label and mounting bracket, then it will not be sufficient to meet USCG requirements, even though it may work perfectly well on a fire.
