However, if you use well known sites and take simple precautions, the Internet is no more dangerous than anywhere else where you might buy something.

1. Know who you are dealing with.

2. Use secure sites (URL starts with "https") when transmitting personal information.

3. Understand the return policy of the vendor.

4. Understand the privacy policy of the vendor.

5. Understand the terms and conditions of the sale including shipping and taxes.
