Cellular phone coverage gets its name from the network of cells that represent a cell tower's coverage area.

In an imaginary world, a cell tower could provide coverage to a large circle, miles and miles across. if you put all these circles on a map, enough to cover every square inch of that map, these circles would have to overlap.

In real life, the shape of a tower's coverage isnt exactly a circle, but the principle remains the same. When you reach the edge of the tower currently providing you service, you've likely already crossed over into the next cell, due to the overlap. The phone/cell network works together to switch you over to the next cell seamlessly, and you wont even notice.
