They are both synonyms but just somewhat similar.
Anthropologically speaking:

A location is a specific area in space. Los Angeles is a location. The park to the right of the school is a location.

What that location means is a place. If you had your first kiss at that park, it becomes a place. Because you think of the gray overhang that is constantly around LA, it is a place. "LA is the place where all those homeless live" would be a "place statement".
