The Homeric Hymn to Demeter 147 gives a clue as to the mother of Hermes by naming her Maia. Sophokles considered Maia Gaia or mother earth. In her agricultural aspect Demeter Maia at Athens was known as Chloê, "green barleycorn," and at Thebes, DEMETER Maia the green corn goddess was "Chloris," the mythological wife of Pylian Neleus.
