The two terms are in a way similar, but entirely different. A hypothesis is an educated guess at the results of an experiment or course of action. This term is generally used in a scientific manner, informing one that the information contained in the hypothesis is not factual and assured to be correct; it is merely the scientist's best guess at the results that he will find. A "fortune telling" differs from a hypothesis in a couple ways. Firstly, a fortune telling, be it a tarot reading, palmistry, numerology, Astrology, or reading tea leaves, is not a scientific endeavor. One generally approaches a seer with a particular question in mind. Through whatever means the seer (fortune teller) is most comfortable with, the seer will use his tool to strive to bring an answer to the querent (person asking the question). For example, after laying out a spread of tarot cards to answer a person's question concerning their relationship, the seer interprets the results and passes them on to the querent. These results, like a hypothesis, is not guaranteed to be true, but the seer's intuition helps guide them in the formation of what they believe is going to happen. Therefore - the major similarity between the two terms is the fact that both are educated guesses regarding a set of events, be it an experiment or problems in a relationship. Here however, the terms differ. A hypothesis is generally formed, and then tested scientifically, in hopes of either proving or disproving the hypothesis. A reading from a seer, on the other hand, can not be systematically tested to prove what the seer predicts. The only thing that does this is the passing of time, as well as the actions taken by the querent after advised at their reading. Telling the future is quite a tricky business as nothing is set in stone as far as the future is concerned. People change the path of their lives with subtle actions and decisions that are made after hearing the seer's belief of what their future holds for them. So both are hypothetical situations, be it the unknown results of a scientific experiment, or the future of a relationship, that are created by those who have the means to do so. One can be proven with testing and retesting to achieve the same results - the other can not be proven in this manner, simply taken as advice that guides a querent down a path they desire.
