Some forms of ghost have been written about pretty much as far back as writing has existed and most known cultures that don't have a written language also believe in ghosts, so it's probably a fair guess that ghosts have existed for as long as humans have existed. Which makes perfect sense, if ghosts are some kind of human persistence after death.
