In the Middle Ages Pages ( both male and female) were noble-born palace attendants, something vaguely akin to interior security types. they did not carry weapons. as the name suggests, they also had clerical assignments- and we still have Page Boys in the US Senate- and there was a child-abuse scandal about that some years back- also the hair style popular with Ingrid Bergman in the Joan Of Arc role. There are in Tarot both male and female Pages, and both Male and Female Knights. in comparison in regular playing cards there are only three Face cards- King, Queen, and Jack. Opinion is dividied as to whether the Jack was originally a Prince ( some wear a smaller crown than the King)- or a Knight- some playing card Jacks have Knight"s helmets with visors.It is interesting. a much larger Royal entourage in Tarot than in traditional 52 card decks.
