The story is that the Jade Emperor (the Emperor of Heaven) wanted to name the cycle of 12 years after 12 animals. To decide which animals would be assigned their year, the Emperor decided to hold a race.
Now, the Cat and Rat were best friends. They would sleep, eat, and play together. When they heard about the race, they were very excited to win-especially the Rat. But they were concerned about being able to cross a large river that was part of the competition. So they came up with a plan, to have the Ox carry them across the river. During the race, the Ox carried them across as planned.
However, as they neared the riverbanks, the Rat spotted the Emperor's palace. Rat wanted to win so much, that Rat pushed Cat off of Ox's back and into the river. Cat didn't like the water and was not very good at swimming.
When they were almost to the shore, the Rat jumped ahead of the Ox and won first place. The Ox got second, and the other animals followed in the order of Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and, finally, Pig. The Cat eventually swam to shore, but arrived to late. A year would not be awarded to Cat.
Cat was so mad at the Rat for being cheated out of a year, that they were sworn enemies forever.
