II. Additional:
In his book, How Did it Begin, R. Basc, states:
"To send a wreath to a funeral and to lay it on the coffin or the grave is a relic of ancient superstition and idol worship." The publication further states that the purpose in doing is, "The floral wreath is a survival of the belief that it was necessary to provide comfort to the departed. The flowers were also regarded as, literally a floral offering, a sacrifice to the dead. They were meant to keep them happy, lest, being dissatisfied they might haunt the mourners".
III. Lastly
Although of Roman origin and the pagans used them to honor the dead, most people today, use the funeral wreath as an expression of sympathy and condolences. This is much like a bride wearing a white gown or veil on a wedding day. In some countries, the white gown or veil was worn to prevent evil spirits from recognizing the bride. However, it has become a quaint tradition and not all cultures use the veil for this purpose.

Wreaths are traditionally hung on the door at Christmas time.
Front Door.
WREATHS are hung on doors around Christmas for decoration. WREATHS are a hold over from the 'green' displayed by pre Christians when they celebrated the winter equinox. A sign of renewed life.
Romans hung wreaths on their doors to show a victory or a celebration to others. This is where the custom of hanging wreaths began. Wreaths were also used to reflect the status or position of the owner of the house.
Christmas Wreaths or 'Advent Wreaths' in England are actually of German origin. They are used to symbolise the coming of Christ and the start of the Christian Church year, the circular shape being one that represents eternity or a never-ending cycle.
While a typical Christmas wreath is made of pine branches, wreaths can be made out of virtually anything. Some popular new options include Christmas ornaments, dried flowers, folded paper, pine cones, branches, and other small objects.
