Martin Luther King Jr. was a Baptist minister and Baptism as well as his interpretation of Christianity had a profound influence on his life and teachings. That being said, he did have some views on Christianity and its relation to pagan religions. In his paper, A Study in Mithraism, King wrote that Christianity was born from a mystery religion, stating "...It is not at all surprising in view of the wide and growing influence of these religions that when the disciples in Antioch and elsewhere preached a crucified and risen Jesus they should be regarded as the heralds of another Mystery Religion, and that Jesus himself should be taken for the divine Lord of the cult through whose death and resurrection salvation was to be had." Other than stating Christianity began as a secretive cult, which is an opinion many scholars and historians on early Christianity agree on, he made little to no other mentions of "mystery religions" or the occult. Christianity started out small and was persecuted by the Romans and Jewish leaders at the time, so King stated that it began as a secretive cult in order to survive.
