Edgar Cayce is known as the 'The Sleeping Prophet'. He was a famous American psychic medium and medical intuitive who lived from 1877 until 1945. Cayce was called the "sleeping prophet" because of his very specific method of doing readings. Every day he would lie down on a couch in his office, place his hands in a relaxed position on his stomach, and proceed to enter an altered state of consciousness known as a 'trance'. He would appear to be asleep, but would then be given the name and location of a person anywhere in the world. In his deep meditative state he would begin to speak in a normal voice and answer any questions asked about that person. Today this is known as doing a psychic "reading".

Cayce left the world an invaluable legacy. Among other things he is considered by some to be the "father of new age spirituality" and it has also been reported that he accurately predicted several major world events, including the Stock Market crash and Depression of 1929, the beginning of World War II, as well as many natural disasters. Most recently there were claims that he predicted the earthquake in Japan. Cayce also founded a non-profit organisation known as the Association for Research and Enlightenment (A.R.E.) in 1931, with the aim to further explore some of the subjects that often came up in his readings, such as spirituality, holistic health, psychic development, reincarnation, and ancient mysteries.

However, the most remarkable aspect of Cayce's legacy is the fact that he had all of his readings recorded in writing. The A.R.E. is the custodian of the more than 14,000 documented psychic readings Cayce channeled during his lifetime. These documents are available to the public for investigation, study and research purposes and have been used in the production of hundreds of books, Documentary Films and television programs on a variety of subjects. Cayce's collection of readings is believed to be the largest recorded body of work by one psychic in the history of the world.
