A Detritivore is an organism that feeds on and breaks down dead plant or animal matter, returning essential nutrients to the ecosystem. Detritivores include microorganisms such as bacteria and protists as well as larger organisms such as fungi, worms, and isopod crustaceans. In a food chain, detritivores are primary consumers.

An Ant is not considered a detritivore but an omnivore. Ants are successful as a species because they have the ability to make a meal of many different types of things. They can eat plants, turning the plant matter into energy or they can eat meat. Different species of ants prefer different types of food. Some eat other insects and dead animals that they come across, while others eat sugar, fruits, seeds, oils, vegetables and other sources of proteins.
