A beverage beinning with E? How could we forget the Egg Cream?! Cold, bubbly, sweet, rich and fun. (My grandmother, Lillian Weisner, said these words with a sparkle in her eye, and would make them for me on those nights when we wanted a special treat. She was born in the Lower East Side of Old New York, and probably knew better than the rest of us how exciting it must have been for a kid to be able to buy one of these, usually only available in diners and ice cream shops. The internet says it's from Brooklyn, but if my Grandmother had it in the 1920's in NY, well I'd believe her over the internet. Until today, I still don't know of any commercially available eggcreams, but if you want to do it at home, try this recipe: New York's Famous Egg CreamYou need a high glass ... and make sure you have a straw ready. You'll need to slurp some down pretty quickly if the bubbles get too high.
* About 2 tablespoons Chocolate Syrup (Fox's U-Bet is the best)
* About 2 table spoons of milk
* Sparkling seltzer water
You can try different combinations in what order to mix them - my favorite is to mix the syrup and milk first, and then add the seltzer (with straw in hand!). Some like it sweeter, some like it less sweet. Note: It's said that you need to get "Fox's U-Bet Syrup." Any other syrup will make your Egg Cream either too bitter or too mild. P.S. Another beverage beginning with E is Eggnog - I've made it once, from scratch. It wasn't easy so I'll leave it for someone else.
