Try changing the wheel speed sensor on the back on the transmission. I had the same problem and it shifted the same way. I had a 99 so it might be different. I had one on my differential and also the back on the tranny.

You'll likely have to remove the transmission pan. Perhaps it has a drain plug. Perhaps not. But either way if you change the fluid, you want to change the filter which is underneath the pan. Changing the fluid without changing the filter is not suggested.
