Though I dont know of any scientific reason not to, I never put a cup of filtered coffee in microwave for more than 30s. It starts to taste bitter if you heat it too much.

I find the taste better if you make expresso-strong coffee and then add very hot water from a kettle later in the day. Does not change the taste.

Coffee kept warm for hours in a metal container (like a thermos coffee dispenser) does taste awful. Does anyone know why?

No, do not put anything made of metal, or containing metal parts, into a microwave oven. To warm your coffee, pour it into your (ceramic or glass) cup first, and then warm that.

Is it safe to microwave coffee?

Yes, it is. Although I can't imagine it tasting as good. Also, if you put the coffee in the water before you microwave it you'll probably find that it will get hotter than it would from your average kettle. The particles in the coffee will accelerate the heating process... just don't get burnt! Oh, and make sure you use a microwave safe container. Easier way is to use a Microwave Coffee Maker. A microwave can reheat 1 cup of coffee in 30 seconds. It takes a coffee-maker 10 minutes to brew 12 cups of coffee. If the coffee-maker requires 900 watts of power and the microwave requires 1200 watt?

The microwave requires more power (1200 watts) than the coffee-maker (900 watts). The microwave reheats coffee quickly in 30 seconds, while the coffee-maker takes 10 minutes (or 600 seconds) to brew coffee. Overall, the microwave is more energy-efficient for reheating coffee in small amounts.
