No, Jacques-Yves Cousteau was not in the submarine service. But let's not take anything from this iconic pioneer of the undersea world.Jacques-Yves Cousteau was a member of the French Navy, but served on surface ships. He was educated at the Collège Stanislas in Paris, and graduated from the École Navale as a gunnery officer. He aspired to become an aviator, but an auto accident prevented his acceptance into that branch of service. Cousteau then turned his attention to what was beneath the sea instead of what was above it, and the rest is history. If you are a SCUBA diver or know of this sport, you know the equipment (the aqualung) he co-invented and developed.
