According to a nation-wide study of over 40,000 adults conducted by the U.S. federal government's National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), over one third of Americans diagnosed as alcohol dependent (alcoholic) are now in full recovery. That is, they now either abstain or drink in moderation. The NIAAA found that the vast majority achieved their success without any 12 step or other program.
